Working On a College Magazine can be.... Hmmmm Interesting

So I am currently working on the College magazine at the Community college I am attending this fall. It is by far my favorite class but the design work has been tedious as the art directors style is insanely different than what I am used to. I LOVE chaos :) So here is my first and revised images I submitted. Lots of good feedback on both.

Here is the 1st design presented in 2 color schemes. (Not quite inverted but close)

Our criteria - Lots of movement, contrasting colors - Include: ARR, American River Revue, Vol. 27 and 2014
